Extremadura University Institution was founded in 1973 (Decreto 991/1973 of 10 April). However, in the late sixties when they start lessons taught the first university in the region, thus achieving the aim pursued by the company repeatedly Extremadura in the early fifties. These college, located in the two provincial capitals, were initially linked to universities geographically closer. So while Badajoz was established in the Faculty of Sciences (Department of Chemistry, 1968) and linked to the University of Seville, in Cáceres established the College of Humanities (Philosophy and Letters, 1971) employee of the University Salamanca, thus beginning the path is now the University.

From then until now the University has experienced steady growth and gradually adding new titles and extending to configure a map defined by several semi faculty teachers and university campus: Mérida, Plasencia, Cáceres and Badajoz.

The largest concentration of titles is located in the latter two semi faculty , created almost parallel as noted and linked to many different subject areas as well since its inception: the Sciences to Badajoz and Cáceres the humanities. Today, yet remains largely the initial distribution semi faculty although both incorporate and degrees on either branch of knowledge that have balanced and compensated.

A qualifications initially established in Badajoz as Chemistry, Agricultural and Industrial Engineering or Medicine, soon to join others like Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Economics and Management, within the scientific field. Humanistic field was represented by the extensive experience of teaching in lessons then called the College of Teachers.

In parallel, in the city of Caceres, the first college humanities, law and philology, were completed with Geography and History, Teaching and other qualifications own scientific and technological field and Veterinary Public Works and Nursing among others.

In recent years, following the trend of other universities, ours has been a tendency towards specialization with new titles and special features of the aforementioned.

Accordingly, the University of Extremadura has adapted to changes in its thirty-one years of life trajectory gradually increasing their academic offerings of securities to set the current range. A process has been accompanied by increasing logical faculty and administration as well as budget allocation.

This growth has also meant a steady improvement of its infrastructure by building new schools, research and multiple uses. As with the recovery and rehabilitation of historic buildings, with the desire to maintain its presence in the city, at a time which appears to be its final location on the periphery of it.

Urbanistically the impact of that growth and institution building has been reflected to a greater or lesser extent in all university campuses in Extremadura, revitalizing urban areas and areas that today are integrated into the city, especially in the case of capital provincial. The campus of Badajoz has revitalized a communication axis of major importance for the region, and that of Cáceres has generated the growth of the city through an area where he had been slowed.

The University of Extremadura is a young but established University facing new challenges and is steadfast in its commitment to society. The road towards European convergence of higher education, entry into the field of new technologies and its projection in new urban areas in Extremadura and exemplified.

Since its creation, the mission of Fundecyt has been to act as a bridge between Company, University and Society, to establish communication channels and collaboration between these groups.
